There are only 6 states without felony provisions for cruelty to animals: Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Maximum jail time, fines, and other consequences vary depending on the state.

Some of the worst punishments for animal cruelty are in Colorado, where a violator can serve up to 6 years in jail or a $500,000 fine as well as counseling, ban on animal ownership and pet protective orders.
